Love and Happiness
by Al Green

Love and happiness...
something that can make you do wrong, make you do right...
Love...

Love and happiness
Wait a minute...
something's going wrong
someone's on the phone
three o'clock in the morning
talkin' about how she can make it right
well,
happiness is when you really feel good with somebody
nothing wrong with being in one with someone
oh, baby, love and happiness
love and happiness...
love and happiness...

Love and happiness
You be good to me
I'll be good to you
we'll be together
we'll see each other
walk away with victory
oh baby,
love and happiness...
love and happiness...

Make you do right... love'll make you do wrong...
make you come home early...
make you stay out all night long...
the power of love...

wait a minute,
let me tell you...
the power of love...
make you do right... love'll make you do wrong...
make you want to dance...
love and happiness...
love and happiness...

love is... wait a minute... love is...
walkin' together...
talkin' together...
say it again...
say it together...
Mmmm....

So Keller last night was incredible. I’ve been seeing the guy since my freshman year in college and he honestly gets better every time it seems like. He is truly an example of the evolution of music and musicianship through a single individual. It’s such a treat to get to grow up with him. Each venue and each scene in each city brings a new substance for him to work with, a new flavor of energy, and he does. I love taking people for their first show because all the descriptions I try to give leading up to the show fall by the wayside once they see him in person. He’s indescribable, utterly unique, a telepathic lightening rod for sure. As a bonus “Bay Fest” was going on in Mobile, which is a music festival, and before we went in to the show we heard Al Green playing across the street on an outdoor stage. You could walk right up to the fence and see and him just great. This was an unexpected treat for Becky especially; she’s a big fan. We heard a few songs and then I was getting anxious to go ahead and head into the Keller show when Becky says, “All I want is a little Love and Happiness…” and sure enough, before she could say anything else, Al Green busts out into his classic “Love and Happiness.” That was even more fodder for the flame that Keller was about to burn.
It was a late night show so of course people were extra excited. He didn’t come on until about midnight and played till just after two. His hair is good and long, had a nice five o’clock shadow, and he sure did look like he was having a damn good time. I think that’s what makes me enjoy him so much is because he really seems to love what he’s doing. He gets off hard on it, and when he’s getting off I’m getting off too.
This set reminded me of the Bonnaroo set he did on my birthday a few years back, mostly cause of the “Till the morning comes” opener and Yoni, and Thunder now that I think about it. He’s so much tighter these days. He needs less to do more. Incredible. The “Deer Creek” was the best Deer Creek I;ve ever heard. At the end when he normally loops his own voices when he harmonizes the outcry, the energy was so much and everyone was singing along he just let the crowd carry the whole thing. So much energy, the whole place, and as chaotic as it is on some levels, everyone is totally focused on the same thing on another. So much potential here I feel. How do you tap this sort of energy? What wondrous things can be done when we all find a way to weld together?

Downtown Mobile is a wild place, I didn’t really realize that. It feels like 6th street, or Bourbon street, a cultural melting pot for sure. We all had a great time, we’ll have to return. Next trip- Dauphin Island.

Earthmovers in the Labyrinth!

The dogs always bark all night when the moon is full. The fields to the right of the drive and all around the lake have all been baled. When you walk through them tonight bathed in all this moonlight it feels surreal. You can’t tell if you’re just waking up or just going to sleep. You can’t tell if its too dark to see or too bright to squint. Magical, it feels terrific.
Jim’s been here for a few days now, things are getting done. I moved back over to Nell’s so Jim can have the back room because it just makes sense to do it that way. We have the space at Nell’s and he’s looking to stay here for longer than I am. It’s been a great little run. Yeah, I guess it’s been a run. The Cole and Grandma Post-Pop Farm Tour of ’06. It was a spectacular run, filled with a bit of everything. I sure do love Grandma and am lucky to have her. Especially to have her as sharp as she is. Mollie’s mother is in town and even she noted how sharp Grandma is. Super Grandma, for sure.
Not that it’s really over, but it won’t be the same with me over at Nell’s. I’ll have to drive over to cook breakfast in the mornings, and I’ll have to pick a time to say goodnight when I head back home, and that’s all right, it just means I’m allowed to start appreciating the blessed sequence as a whole.
I paused right there to see what I should write next and this warm bubbling sensation of graciousness started to come up into my chest and into my throat and into my head and then it just flows out.
There is a certain mode of consciousness a person is in when the person is in the midst of the thing they are thinking about. If a person is a football player they are thinking about playing football six days a week and they are actually playing football one day a week. The mode of conscious you are in when you are actively playing is a unique type of mode of consciousness. A game day mentality is the result of all the thoughts and energy put towards preparing for it for the last six days. The mode of consciousness a football player is in when he is preparing for the game during the week is different than the mode the player is in during the game. The point of all this is just to show through a simple example an aspect of how the actual nature of the mind works; to illustrate a descriptive trait of how the mind actually functions. It’s an objective reference to the subjective state all of us, you and I both, can learn to enter in subjectively. If we can do this the need for objective definitions of truth will be lightened because these truths become self-evident. They are not facts, they are observations of what It is, or appears to be. This example shows just two different types of conscious modes a single person shifts between in their being. A single self, a single point of equilibrium.
In life, when death occurs, or trauma, or transcendental experiences, there is another particular mode of conscious that kicks in analogous to that game day mode. When I say I can look at the run as a whole now, it just means that I don’t feel as if I’m in the same instinctually reeling mindset I have been since I arrived three days after Pop entered the hospital in May. That’s a good little chunk of life right there.

Once you actually start to notice yourself, it’s hard to take yourself too seriously.

Keller Williams is playing in Mobile at midnight tomorrow. MaryBeth and I are going down to meet Becky for the show. MaryBeth asked me to explain what “heady” meant and I’ve been having a tough time. It’s like “gamey,” in the sense that it’s hard to describe, but once you’ve had it, you’ll never forget it. I told her if she went to the Keller show she’d get a taste of something “heady”, a whole scene of heady people actually, and then she could know forever.
Oh and Becky, and everyone else I guess, Jim told me what the scat is because we saw some more. Turns out, it’s not scat- it’s earthworms.

tightly wound ssarggrassssarggrass

When the clouds come out on sunny Fall days it delights me to roam the fields and dance the winds. Knowing the radiance is just a sheath away pulls me into a typhoon of joy to be alive, to be perceptual, to be aware of my own gimmicks.

It starts with one then it feeds off the next
Collaboration gives rise to acquaintance
The sense in swirling, changing and free
Use our faculties to please the belly of the beast

Nothing actually moves except the point of perception itself.

By self examination and inward focus, one can discover that all states of consciousness are the result of the execution of an option. They are not unchangeable certainties determined by uncontrollable factors at all. This can be discovered by examining how the mind works.
We could typify human life as various fields and levels of human consciousness talking to each other and seeing people as impersonal spokespersons for these various levels.
For a brief moment, as the self disappears into the Self, there is a transitory amazement and awe of profound proportion and depth. The death of the self is experienced and then all is stillness and peace.
Self is context where self is content.
Acts of courage awaken the soul to its own innate power which it will need to reach the ultimate awareness.
The way out of conflict is not to try to eliminate the negative but instead to choose and adopt the positive. To view that one’s mission in life is to understand rather than to judge automatically resolves moral dilemmas.
It can be said that the ego is a compilation of positionalities held together by vanity and fear. It is undone by radical humility which undermines its propagation.
What the people in the world actually want is the recognition of who they really are on the highest level, to see that the same Self radiates forth within everyone, heals their feelings of separation, and brings about a feeling of peace. To bring peace and joy to others is the gift of the benevolence of the Presence.
We could liken the mind to a goldfish bowl. The water is consciousness itself. The fish are the thoughts and concepts. Beyond the content of the mind is the context or space through which the thoughts occur. The water always remains the same and is unaffected by the thoughts.

In Reality, nothing is ‘causing’ anything else. Everything is the expression of its own essence and is self-existent. Its appearance is dependent on everything else in the universe and the point of view from which it is observed. Everything is actually self-existence in its reality because everything is part of All That Is and has no individual parts, separateness, or independent existence.
The small self is dissolved by the Self. The healing attitude of the Self to the self is compassion; it is through forgiveness that one is forgiven. This willingness to surrender, arising out of the grace of God, permits the power of God expressed as the Holy Spirit to recontextualize understanding and, by this device, to undo the reign of perception and its attendant duality which is the source of all suffering. The dissolution of duality is the ultimate gift of God, for it dissolves the very source and capacity for suffering. In nonduality, suffering is not possible.
Like empty space that is unsullied by its content, or water that is unaffected by the fish that swim through it, the mind of God is beyond all form. Like space, it is equally present in the objects therein.
That which is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent is not vulnerable to threat or emotional upset; thus, God is not prone to revenge, jealousy, hatred, violence, vanity, egotism, or the need for adulation or compliments. The beneficiary of worshipping is the worshipper. God is totally and absolutely complete and has no needs or desires. God is not unhappy or upset if you have never heard of him or don’t believe in him.
Many of the old-world descriptions of God are actually reprehensible and figments of man’s guilty projection of fear. Primitives thought that every storm meant that God was angry and needed sacrifices to calm down. Volcanoes also indicated that God was angry. The ego demands explanations and looks for ‘causes’. God was therefore rationalized to be the ‘cause’ of earthly event that created fear, such as earthquakes, famine, floods, pestilence, storms, drought, barrenness or ill health. God was considered the great punitive enforcer as well as the great rewarder. Thus arose the numerous gods with many different descriptions in the traditions of the cultures within which these myths originated. (Natural disasters occurred before mankind was even on the planet.)
Power is analogous to a gravitational or magnetic field in that everything which occurs within it is impeccably and automatically the consequence of the nature of the field itself. The field does not ‘choose’ to attract anything nor does it have different rules for different objects. The field represents total equality. Likewise, in a spiritual field of power, everyone and everything is attracted and influenced by virtue of its own constitution or spiritual ‘weight’, vibration, or attractor field.

Q: But what about morality? Doesn’t letting go of right and wrong and judgment of others lead to immortality?
A: Denotations of right and wrong are practical guides to behavior for people who are not yet spiritually evolved. They are a temporary substitute for a greater awareness. Thus, we teach a child that it is ‘bad’ to cross the street alone because they lack the awareness of danger. By adulthood, such a contextualization as right or wrong about crossing the street is no longer meaningful or significant. We look both ways before crossing the street to avoid being run over, not because it is wrong or bad. With spiritual progress, ethical values replace moralistic dictums, just as awareness of spiritual truth replaces dogma and coercive belief systems. Behaviors that have to be outlawed to suppress their occurrence in the general population have lost any meaning to people who are far more advanced.

What is the meaning of life?
Work in progress!

*

Take a drop
Dilute your delusion
Have another
Champion the dynasty
Of your elder self.
The residual center
Flowing under over through
You and I
Am gelatinous
Adaptable surface
Absorbed in a forest
Of ethereal matters.

*

The self: a wispy spot of drifting awareness, constantly creating and recreating, identifying and reidentifying an illusionary sense of it’s boundaries.
All is from the void, we are the surface of a boiling pot of water between the liquid and the steam.

*

If there’s no one to worry
What’s there to worry about?
Suffering isn’t going to go away, the sufferer is.

Metaphysical problems:
If there is no self, who is living the good life?
What is reincarnated if there is no self?
How can you desire to lose suffering?

How can I be living the good life if I cease to exist?

*

Tickle tough times
Focus on attainability
Jive on smiles
Give away the shy dogface

*

I’ve been getting up for days
Over twenty years
But on some days
I wake up more than once
I wake in walking, laughing, observing
Day’s events set in play
By an earlier me.
Real thinkers think thinking brings
waves into the world.
Waves crash, against or alone.

Fall in love with the greatest Beauty
But don’t use words like great to find her
Meet and greet every moment you breath and
Don’t try too hard to fake it.

blast from the past

( Mississippi John Hurt )

Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned,
To see her son Louis leavin' home
The angels laid him away
The angels laid him away,
They laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away
Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned,
To see her son Louis leavin' home
The angels laid him away
Oh, Bob shot once and Louis shot too,
Shot poor Collins, shot him through and through
The angels laid him away
Oh, kind friends, oh, ain't it hard?,
To see poor Louis in a new graveyard
The angels laid him away
The angels laid him away,
They laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away
Oh, when they heard that Louis was dead
All the people they dressed in red
The angels laid him away
The angels laid him away,
They laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away
Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned,
To see her son Louis leavin' home
The angels laid him away
The angels laid him away,
They laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away

the OTHER fish

there we go, for reference

Morning Dew
Grateful Dead

Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey
Walk me out in the morning dew today
Can't walk you out in the morning dew, my honey
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today

I thought I heard a baby cry this morning
I thought I heard a baby cry today
You didn't hear no baby cry this morning
You didn't hear no baby cry today

Where have all the people gone, my honey?
Where have all the people gone today?
There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people
You never see those people anyway

I thought I heard a young man mourn this morning
I thought I heard a young man mourn today
I thought I heard a young man mourn this morning
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today

Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey
Walk me out in the morning dew today
Can't walk you out in the morning dew, my honey
I guess it doesn't matter anyway
Well I guess it doesn't matter anyway

this little piggy went to the farm...

So we had a Pig Roast, it was great. In hindsight starting the fire at 3am and getting the meat put on about 5:30am makes for super tender pork come the afternoon, but you can only get so far on meat and beer alone. Trying to be “to cool for sleep” takes it’s toll the next day. Luckily we’re professionals and we had a great time. I was lucky enough to get in a nap, some people hit up the hammock for an hour or two, but come noon we were all going strong again. We’d pull a Boston Butt off about every hour and half and each one would get more tender than the last. The more you ate, the more you could drink. I made some purple sticky sangria and we drank out of Mason jars, it was a hit. Who’s Mason by the way? Nobody knew, but they knew he made jars.
We went fishing for sunrise Sunday morning, and by Sunday afternoon we were all buzzing and doing arts and crafts. You can’t just jump into arts and crafts, you’ve got to spring it on people at just the right time. Normally when they’ve already met all their expectations for the day and find themselves looking for something else to do. Then you get into it yourself, people notice, get curious that you appear to be having so much fun being in kindergarten again, and want to join in. Luckily I had enough figurines for everyone to paint one, and then we let Grandma pick the winner. It was hard to put her in a pinch having to pick a favorite, so the goldfish have 9 new friends to hang out with. Not in the bowl of course, around the bowl. See when you live in a fishbowl you don’t always know where the water ends and reality begins. (Don’t tell the fish)
Emmie came up from Auburn for the night just in time to eat some pork, get a Mason jar and paint a frog-bee plaster figurine orange and blue. Orange and blue, get it? Wouldn’t you know it no one caught a fish all day... Even got the boat out in the water and I don’t believe anyone caught a fish. Grandma went to bed I remember, and then about 30 minutes later or so I was sitting by the grill and I thought I heard Grandma on the porch talking. I was a little drunk by this point to be honest, so I didn’t turn around but I closed my eyes and tuned in real hard to hear what she was telling someone.
The gist of it seemed to be that the neighbors had called to let grandma know that some of the people from the party had gotten the EZGO stuck somewhere on their property and wanted her to let Brooks or me know so we could come help.
Shit, I thought.
Luckily Brooks was already over there so Emmie and I went and got in the car and drove around the field and over to where the neighbors property meets ours. There were headlights and flashlights over there so it was easy to spot. From a distance I thought the headlights were the EZGO’s lights and it was just sort of, you know, stuck. As we walked up to the scene though I realized that the headlights were actually the headlights of the neighbors Bobcat, which is like a one man ass-kicking tractor machine for construction and stuff. All I could see of the EZGO was the roof.
Apparently the guys were driving on the edge of property and went over into our neighbors because there isn’t a fence or anything. The neighbor came out to ask them if they were lost, and instead of slowing down to talk to them they freaked and tried to drive away. What they didn’t see coming was the creek that runs along the edge of our property and drove straight into it. The creek was almost perfectly as deep and the EZGO is high. It was a pretty ridiculous scene to come upon after drinking Sangria and pig all day. I just imagined what that must have felt like to be driving full speed in the dark and suddenly the ground drops out below you and BAM! you’re in a hole. The two kids that had been driving the thing were standing on the opposite bank looking sheepish, and the first thing the one guy yells out when he sees me is, “I kept your book dry!”
Earlier that night we had started talking deep and he promised me that he really loved books and wanted to change his life. “No but seriously, do you really want to change your life? Can you really deal with a book that has the power to change your life? Are you going to actually read this?” I asked him seriously through my red teeth.
“Yeah yeah man, for sure. I feel like I met you for a reason man, this all make sso much sense…” he tells me on and on.
Well walking up to the scene I had the thought that I might have been too liberal with my judge of character in giving him my last copy of Power vs. Force, but when the power moves you sometimes, you have to just let it move you. My next thought was that, then again, perhaps the guy who drives the EZGO into the creek is the guy who needs to read the book more than ever.
We thanked the neighbors again and again and tomorrow we’re going to make them a Boston Butt care-package and Brooks promised he’d bake them a Shelby County Prize Winning Lemon Ice Box Pie.
Well after we pulled the EZGO out of the creek bed with the Bobcat by literally uprooting the tree that was standing in the way of doing that, Emmie and I took a tour. We went and sat on the dock and two of the fishing poles were still lying there, but only one had a rubber worm still on it. Emmie started fishing sort of just to fish while we talked, not really paying attention, just sort of reeling as we told stories and remembered the fish Judson had caught in this lake all those years ago. Uncle Tom got so excited about it he had it stuffed and mounted and when I went up to the Wesley’s lake house this summer I saw it hanging proudly on the wall with a little engraved slot that said “Judson Wesley, Pop’s Farm, 0-0-89” I can’t remember the date exactly, but I remember it was ’89. So it’s late and the fields have just been cut that day and the water is real still and the half moon is big and bright and the stars are popping out of the sky the way they do some nights and then, sort of out of nowhere, Emmie feels a bite. It kind of takes her a moment to register there really is a bite on the line and when she does she starts reeling like crazy and I get real so excited I go silent with wide eyes and watch real close.
“No way- do you really have a fish on there? Oh my god you really do! This never happens!”
Sure enough the rod caught tension and she started pullign him in. He was a fighting fish though so he broke the surface a few times and when he did, flopping there in the moonlight, I can honestly say it was the biggest fish I’ve ever seen in the lake. Emmie did her startled best to pull him in but there was slack on the line, or drag, we weren’t sure, and I hesitated cause I didn’t know where to put him. We didn’t have a bucket or anything, I wasn’t expecting to be dealing with a fish at that point in the night either. He jumped out of the water two or three more times before he finally shook loose and all was calm again except our heartbeats.
“No way that just happened! That was huge! Nobody caught a fish all day and you just caught the biggest one ever by accident!” I was really excited to say the least, Emmie was too best I could tell.
Now I know the first thing everybody asks when we tell them is going to be, “did you get a picture?” and no of course we didn’t. They might even say it doesn’t really count since we didn’t land it, but if they did I’d say they’re missing the whole magic point about catching the fish anyways. He did us a favor shaking out the hook so we didn’t have to, I would have let him go anyways. It’s just the type of people we are. But what was magic about it was that it really was one of those things that happen that catch you off guard and almost feel so unbelievable they seem magic, and all you want to do is tell someone about the magic but at the same time you know it’s not going to be the same when you tell it, it can’t be. To be cliché it’s just another “big fish story.” You try and try but it never seems to come across what you’re trying to talk about, the part that gets you so excited. That part, I think, is that tiny moment we had right when it first happened. The magic moments always come as an unexpected surprise, and those feelings, those moments when you actually experience catching the biggest fish ever, bigger than Judson’s even, well that’s the part that gets you excited, that’s the part you try to tell the story about. Even though I’m trying to tell you now, I think the best way to appreciate those moments is to know you can’t tell anyone and still appreciate them for all they’re worth. True joy is always going to be ultimately subjective, and that’s ok. The moral of the story is don’t ever stop fishing, even if you aren’t really paying attention while you do it. You gotta leave that line out there just in case. Just in case it’s your time to catch the biggest fish in the lake. You never know when it’s going to be your time, in fact it seems to be the less you think about it or wanting it to be your time the more opportunities it has to just happen, out of nowhere. Always leave a line in the water, the big fish feed late at night.

I WOULD NOT BE HERE

by John Hartford

I would not be here if I hadn't been there
And I wouldn't been there if I hadn't just turned
On Wednesday the third in the late afternoon
Got to talking with George who works out in the back
And only because he was getting off early
To go see a man at a Baker Street bookstore
With a rare first edition of steamboats and cotton
A book he would never have sought in the first place
Had he not been inspired
By a fifth grade replacement schoolteacher in Kirkwood
Who was picked just at random
By some man on a school board who couldn't care less
And she wouldn't been working
If not for her husband
Who moved two months prior to work in the office
Of a man he had met
While he served in the army
And only because they were in the same barracks
An accident caused by a poorly made roster
Mixed up on the desk of a Sargent from Denver
Who wouldn't be in but for bein in back
In the car he was ridin before he enlisted that hit a cement truck
and killed both his buddies
But a back seat flew up there and spared him from dyin
And only because of the fault of a workman
Who forgot to turn screws on a line up in Detroit
Cause he hollered at Sam who was hateful that morning
Hungover from drinkin alone at a tavern
Because of a woman he wished he'd not married
He met long ago at a jewish bar mitzvah
For the son of a man who had moved there from Jersey
Who managed a drugstore that sold the prescription
That cured up the sunburn he caught way last summer

Name that Scat!

Hey Blake or Geoff or anyone who can play this game- something's been scatting in the Labyrinth, can you name that animal? I don't know what it is, but i'd like too. Does anyone know what kind of animal this poop belongs too?

give me his hide

By the way you know that hope'll make you strange...

All i'm sayin' is don't listen to angry music. trace back your self to were it first came into your life, think about it, and then transcend the opposites.

"pardon me doug, is this a picture of Oddis Retting? Yes yes, taken just before he died! won't you give me his hide?"

Words do not begin to convey what has been conveyed to me in simple moments gazing with my whole being at an old picture of Dad, brooks, and me in a baby backpack over his shoulder at a national park. Brooks is on the fence looking over, and Dad's holding his hand because he know he wants to look and that's ok, he just doesn't what him to ever fall, and that's why he's eternally holding your hand but letting you walk on the edge. it seems overcast in the background. Dad is clearly very happy, you're inquisitive, and i'm the one looking at the camera and chewing my finger.

someday, but not today

In Tall Buildings
By John Hartford, 1976

Someday, baby, when I am a man,
and other's have taught me
the best that they can
they'll sell me a suit
and cut off my hair
and send me to work in tall buildings

and it's goodbye to the sunshine
goodbye to the dew
goodbye to the flowers
and goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway
I must not be late
going to work in tall buildings

now when I retire
and my life is my own
I made all the payments
it's time to go home
and wonder what happened
betwixt and between
when I went to work in tall buildings

and it's goodbye to the sunshine
goodbye to the dew
goodbye to the flowers
and goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway
I mustn't be late
going to work in tall buildings

railroad earth

we met up with Jud for the Railroad Earth show, it was great. Little 5 Points in Atlanta is a really neat part of town, I never knew it existed. The show was terrific. Railroad Earth is the kind of band that still hangs out in the lobby before their shows. Mollie almost asked them...

the second encore was Railroad Earth, the song I posted the day before.

Skippin in the Mississippi Dew
John Hartford

Well I dream of a girl and a stern wheel steamboat
A pilothouse stove and engine room brass
Hanging on a post by the maindeck stairway
Long hair skippin in the Mississippi dew

Oh the river run wide, run deep, run muddy
The river run long after I am gone
With the steamboat wheeling on a big wide bend
Just skippin in the Mississippi Dew

Well I went up the river come way last Sunday
Twelve feet of water on the Memphis gage
Wouldn't be home without the muddy water rolling
Paddle wheel skippin in the Mississippi dew

Oh the river run wide, run deep, run muddy
Oh the river run long after I am gone
With the steamboat wheelin on a big wide bend
Just skippin in the Mississippi Dew

Now it used to be Spring I'd ship on the river
Thirty five days on a balla [sic] line boat
I'd make a little money, get a springtime chicken
And take off a skippin in the Mississippi Dew

Oh the river run wide, run deep, run muddy
Oh the river run long after I am gone
With the steam boat wheelin round a big wide bend
Just skippin in the Mississippi dew
