Happy Birthday, Dad.
When Mom sent me a text this morning reminding me it was going to be your 62nd birthday, I realized for the first time that you would have been 62 when I turn 26, which is in 16 days. 62 and 26. Crazy, or maybe not. Silly, who knows? I remember we were both Gemini’s too.
I remembered when your Dad was getting ready to pass over the to the other side to meet you, and I was there to hand him off. He was turning 88 on June 17th, and I was turning 22 on June 13th. 22 and 88. I realized I was almost exactly 1/4th as old as Pop. He was a Gemini too I remember. I remember he wound up passing on my birthday. We buried him on his. Crazy, maybe…
I guess I don’t know what all these little coincidences mean, or if they mean anything at all. I figure they might mean nothing, or they might mean something far beyond my capacity to comprehend, it wouldn’t matter anyways. Would it?
What I do know is that when I read the number 62 on my phone from Mom’s text at work today, I stopped dead in my tracks, and began to smile.
It was a special smile. Do you know the sort of smile I am talking about? It was one of those smiles that descends upon you, or erupts from inside you, seemingly out of no where, sparked by something tiny but intimate. Tiny but intimate to your own secret life story, you know? I’m talking about the level of brain chatter slightly below your conscious threshold, where your subconscious whispers to your conscious self who you think you are at any given moment in time. It was from somewhere in between there that this smile began. It was the kind of smile that doesn't stop at the corners of your mouth, but keeps going all the way back to the nape of your neck, and then radiates a tingling pulsation all the way down and up and out of your spine from there.

Well, I had one of those smiles, and in the space that immediately followed it I had a flood of wonderful memories of you come rushing in to fill me up. Memories that were joyful, memories I haven’t had anything to spark their remembrance of for too long now. The smile kept on going and began to turn into an emotional swell as I was swept along, the type of swell and sweeping the likes of which I may not have been having enough of recently. From the swell came a the cautious, pent up tears, and by the time I noticed my body again I realized I had just taken a small journey of some sort. A journey that started with a smile.
I became aware again that the smile on my face was still there. In fact, it was even deeper than that. I noted a hint of sacred humor mixed in with the whole numbers deal, and I was laughing a special laugh under the joy and sadness and irony of it all. I remembered what it used to feel like when you were around, and it was great. I remembered that there is a way to appreciate tragic beauty in life, and it begins and ends with a smile. I suppose it is your birthday so I should be looking for a way to give you a present, but I feel like you gave me one instead. I want to say thank for the smile and all that came with it when I realized the 26 / 62 correlation. You know 26 is a cosmic number for me. My friend Scott has just begun to pick up on it too.
Now I don't even know if it was really you there laughing with me today, and I don’t even know what it would really mean if you were, but if it was you I want to thank you for sending me that feeling again.
And if it wasn’t really you per say, if it really did all just come from within my own mind, my own self, then I am fine with that too, because in here is where I keep you now. Maybe those types of smiles come when you remember a part of your self you didn’t even realize you might have forgotten.

I am sitting on the top of a mountain looking over Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley where I live now, and I can’t help but smile again at the thought of you actually knowing where I am. You would love this place. You are the person who taught me to love the outdoors, to see the highest creations of Creation in nature, and to take the time to find joy in solace.
It has been sunny all morning, and now the afternoon thunderclouds are starting to roll in over the mountains. The wind is here, just enough to make you feel the entire surface of your skin when it blows by. Billowy white clouds and tall dark clouds, and brilliant, bright blue skies are laying on top of each other neck and neck. I am at the level of the lowest cloud. I can see the river winding down the valley from Independence Pass, and I can see the snowcapped mountains off in the distance where that water is coming from. This is what I can from where I am sitting at this moment in time.
It occurs to me now, as I remember yet another dusty memory of you, that one of the last things you said to me before the cancer consumed your body completely was, “I live vicariously through you, Cole. Go have fun.”
Well Dad, if you are here, if it really is more than just a memory of how it felt when you where around, then I hope you can take a peak at the world through my eyes for this moment. And if you can see all this beauty, the beauty you taught me to appreciate, then maybe I managed to give you some sort of birthday present after all.
I love you. I miss you.

Jumping back into it. I am going to jump back into it.

It is fleeting the desire you have to capture your thoughts for an audience, real or make believe, that you never really know. You don’t know who it is exactly, or who you really want it to be, exactly, but there is an audience you are trying to reach. There is a group you want to understand you. It is for you, it is for them.
There is a familiar energy building. A positive energy, at least it seems positive, but to what end or in what capacity it is coming or going, I really don’t know. To question it too much might ruin it. Like looking directly at the thing you are looking at, thus pushing it to the side of your vision. It is important to look at the important things from the corner of your eye. Be subtle about it. Come on slow. Don’t scare what you are really going for away.

We are the people dancing in the streets up here. The people still dancing in the streets despite the gloom, despite the economic clusterfuck, we are up on the hill and we are doin’ the boogie. We are the lucky one’s for sure, because I think it is a good thing for everybody that we still do the boogie. The light has to stay alive somewhere in the world doesn’t it?

I think it is important to have many different views on a single subject over the course of a lifetime. A lifetime is meant for renewed and refounded understanding of common, archetypal situations. One must be rigid to the degree that they do not sway the integrity of their purpose for discovery, and flexible enough to bend in the wind like a reed when it comes to situational clarification of the eternal invisible truths. In any case, I am very excited to be preparing to go see a Phish show again. All the doubts about the show towards the end seem to be erased, because now, everything is fresh to everybody, even in their own particular way. The slate was wiped clean and buried, but I guess the handle was left sticking out.

More to come as far as the reunion goes. The world has changed a lot in the last five years, let’s see how much the lot scene has.

I drove to Boulder and back in a single day last week. My friend Lesley sold me her Thule cargo roof for a great price, I just had to drive out to Boulder to get it. I couldn't really start packing until I had the cargo roof, so after procrastination ran a small cycle I did the drive. I took Independence Pass, which is beautiful, and closed during the winter. As you can see, it is getting close to closing time.
I just arrived in Pasadena, and it is raining and sort of misty. What a completely different type of climate. From dry to damp. I noticed as I descended from Aspen that fall was just beginning in the low lands. In Aspen and the rockies the leaves peaked almost two weeks ago. They are all gone. On the way down through Utah and Nevada I saw trees in their brightest stages of yellow.

Dear Dad,

It has been six years today. It just so happens that I was in Frisco, CO yesterday. Frisco is the same town I was in the night before you died, August 17th, six years ago. It was as far as Tanya and I could drive in a single day from Pasadena. We left that morning. That was the morning I told you goodbye and kissed your cold, bald head for the last time. I can still feel your head on my cheek from that last hug, that morning, six years ago to the day, yesterday, in Frisco…
I was at Copper Mountain for a music festival called Yarmony Grass; I think you would have loved it. I guess its funny because I never had the chance to share with you the really good music Brooks and I have found these days. I’m chuckling to myself wondering what you would think about the bluegrass. I bet you would love “Railroad Earth.” Imagine you listening to “Old Man and the Land” and talking about how crazy it is that that song it basically about Pop and the farm. I bet you’d love it, as much as you could the way you love music.
Remember when you used to drive us on summer vacations and to soccer games and such? After a while letting us goof around on the radio you would turn it off all of a sudden and take a deep breath and give an exaggerated sigh of relief and say, “See, doesn’t that sound good?” with a big smile on your face.
Then again I also remember the day you drove me to take my Polytechnic School entrance exam and we listened to “I am the Eagle” by John Denver at full blast. That song was the inspiration for the essay I wrote on the test I took that day, the year I was admitted. You were the best of both worlds I guess, the Poet and the Engineer. Philosophically you seemed to be more inclined to lean from your ultra-practical root system to a romantic idealization of the power of Art and the spiritual unknowns. I sure would love to talk to you about people like David Hawkins and things like Integral Theory; I can only sort of imagine what you would say. These are the ways I miss you now Dad. Just like you said, they change as I grow older and change myself.
Mom was married in May, I am sure you know, and I am sure you are pleased, and that you are pleased that we know you are pleased. Mom was really glowing, Dad. I never thought she would be that happy again after you died. I just didn’t think it would be possible. It just goes to show that over six years it is incredible what can happen. If you’d asked me six years ago if I ever thought I’d go to Mom’s wedding and be happy about it, I would have had my doubts. But now, after all that’s happened, it is so clear that Mom deserves to have someone to grow old with, and that you are nothing but happy for her. It’s just that. It’s that I was there, at Mom’s wedding, and everyone and everything was right and good about it. Your twin was even there giving his blessing. Weird! Of course it made me think about you tremendously, but none of the thoughts had any ill feeling attached to them. All the thoughts and feelings I had came from the feeling that this day was a powerful sign of the times in my life. It was one of those check-in points in your life where you step back and get a good, long, full perspective on your self so far. It was powerful and good.
“Six years,” I thought. “It’s really been six years.” It is incredible how much Life can surprise you for the better if you can have the attitude and patience to let it. That is a lesson you taught me before you died, and have been continually teaching me ever since you did.
Well, I miss you Dad. Life for me is still alive, and powerful, and rich in ironic hidden spiritual subtext I always seem to be just on the brink of seeing in its entirety. Ha! That sentence was sort of a joke, but it’s the sort of joke I never got make with you, with all of its “ironic hidden spiritual subtext” in the full light of your gaze.
Did you ever feel like that- like this- Dad? Did you pass this part on to me, or am I just making it up, or what? I’d give a pretty penny in cosmic change if I could ever have that conversation with you. Is that conversation worth wondering about? I do hate setting myself up for disappointment, but I think I have a pretty good grip on that balancing act these days. The thin-line between setting your intentions, creating your own reality, affirming what you want in your life- and being grounded and realistic enough to face reality, True Reality, with the respect and awe it warrants during those rare moments in life when you are actually made to sit down directly in front of and made to gaze directly into “It.” Life and Death moments. You know what I am talking about.
I love you Dad. I have been learning many lessons about Love I would love to share with you sometime too, but that’s a whole other deal. I want you to know that everything is well and good and getting better for everybody here. Brooks is married and in love and seems to be growing and integrating and expanding consistently, practically, experientially through his studies. Mom and Winn are living life and keeping each other young and creating a beautiful place to raise two brilliant ten year olds.
You would be so proud to see the way Mom has shared what she learned with you raising Brooks and me. She just has so much to give, you know? She can make such a difference in their lives. It is miraculous, the whole bit. And that’s how Winn and Mom say they look at it. It’s a miracle for both of them that they met the other one when they did. I get it. It is great. It makes me happy to see how happy Mom is. It was a long time coming, but you never left the forefront Dad. You are the trunk of the tree that made any and all of this possible. It is an incredible mosaic of love Dad. Nobody forgets you, you are still here, it is incredible.
Wherever and whatever else you are doing, thank you for still being here with me. Thank you for always answering me when I ask myself, “What would Dad do?” I don’t know how you do it, but you are always there when I ask. Thank you so much for the umbrella of love you brought me into the world under. It is the greatest gift one single human being can give to another human being because it is a timeless gift. It is something that is given and can never be taken away. It is something eternal. It teaches you the values of eternity. I love you eternally.

I am heading back to Aspen today and it looks like they still haven't cleared the snow from Independence Pass. Will there ever e a spring?

Our Morning Visitor

We had a visitor outside our window this morning. I think he was just trying to get out of the blizzard we've been having for the past seven days. They are saying we could still get up to 2 1/2 feet by Friday night. There is so much snow around here it is hard to explain. From talking to the folks who've been living in this valley for more than thirty years, this is the most snow EVER, and it is only the first week of February!

Xavier Rudd

Xavier Rudd played the Belly Up the other night and it was the best concert I've seen there yet. Every Australian in Aspen was there seeing as how Xavier Rudd is from Australia. Such a great show, what a surprise. It's hard to really describe what he plays really because he's a multi-instrumentalist. Simao giving Ana Rita free snowboarding lessons. It only took 3 1/2 hours to almost do one run. Kudo's to Simao for his patience. Brisa and I didn;t last more than ten-minutes.
